Session 11
Session 11: The Great Commission
Introduction:
The last 10 weeks we have been exploring what it means to follow in Jesus footsteps as a leader. We discovered the primary principles of the faith that govern our relationship with God and our relationship with others. We discovered that our identities have been have been shaped by the relentless love of God as he pursues a relationship with us. We uncovered ways God desires to transform us by his gift of the Holy Spirit examined passages of scripture that teach us about what it means to be led by the Holy Spirit. As we look back on our Journey in the Wilderness lets revisit some spiritual markers that have shaped our experience and served as guides to the path we’ve taken.
GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF LIFE WITH CHRIST
As we discovered at the beginning of this journey the guiding principle for our lives found throughout scripture is to Love God and to Love Others. Let’s revisit these some of the key passages that highlight these guiding principles:
Revisit:
Matthew 22:37-40
Deuteronomy 10:12-13
John 13:34
THE PROCESS OF SPIRITUAL MATURITY
The next marker in our journey was the introduction to the concept of process in spiritual maturity. It’s not an instant transformation. Spiritual maturity takes intentional hard work. Relationships are hard work and they require us to endure and persevere, but our revelation of the identity of Christ overshadows the difficulty we may experience in our relationship with Him. As we come to know Jesus more and more we become captivated by His beauty and love for us. We discussed that to truly find our identity we must first fully know and experience the identity of Jesus Christ as Lord in our lives. It is only by surrendering our lives to Jesus that we can truly know who God made and created us to be. Let’s take a look back at the core passages that help us understand this concept.
Revisit:
2 Peter 1:1-11
STAYING ROOTED IN CHRIST
The key to us growing in relationship with Jesus Christ is to remain in Him. We can’t do anything of value apart from Christ. In our journey we learned the importance of making it a habit in our life to self-examine and reflect. We should regularly be evaluating our relationship with Jesus. We need to focus and streamline our lives to focus on things that relate to the purpose of Jesus Christ. If any of our purposes are not found in Him we begin to part and will be separated from the vine. Our lives will lack spiritual vitality and be void of the fruits of the Spirit. Let’s revisit the passages that illustrate the principle of staying rooted in Christ.
Revisit:
John 15
Colossians 1:9-14
BECOMING GOOD STEWARDS
One of the other key markers along our journey was the idea of stewardship. We discovered that everything we possess is a gift of God and meant for the purpose of making us righteous. We learned through God’s Word that every thought, attitude and behavior belong to God. All of our time, resources, and relationships belong to Jesus and are given to us for the purpose of conforming us to be like Him. Let’s go back to some passages that help us keep perspective our relationship with Jesus and how His authority over us shapes the way we live.
Revist:
Ecclesiastes 3:1-17
Matthew 6:25-34
BE WHO WE ARE MADE TO BE
The next marker in our journey took us to discovering what characteristics and attributes are consistent with the attributes of a child of God. We explored the way God has made us and formed us and how to grow into being that person through the direction and power of the Holy Spirit.
Revisit:
Galatians 5:13-26
Psalm 119:73-80
FOLLOWING JESUS’ EXAMPLE
The final portion of our journey brought us back to the idea of relationship with Jesus and what it means to follow Him. We examined the example Jesus left for us and studied what it means to follow the model of leadership He left us. We discovered that an integral part to influencing and leading like Jesus is humility. Let’s take a look at the core passages of scripture that address the character of leaders that follow after Jesus.
Revisit:
Philippians 2:1-16
Deuteronomy 17:14-20
THE CHARGE
We started this journey with the premise that everyone influences someone. Our definition of leadership was based on the idea that leaders influence the people around them. So the decision we make as followers of Jesus isn’t whether or not we are leaders but simply if we will choose to be good ones or bad ones. However, if we truly are followers of Jesus then we must take seriously His charge to and be obedient to faithfully discharge the desires and commands of our boss Jesus Christ.
Read Matthew 28:18-20
Go make disciples, teach them to obey all the commands I’ve given you…
I AM with you ALWAYS till the end the end of the age.
